Computer Skills for Seniors
by Scott Adkinson

On average very few senior citizens have a
computer or know how to use on. In this day and
age having a computer or at least understanding and
knowing how one works is very important. Many
seniors feel intimidated by computers feeling that
there is no way they can ever learn how to use one.
Learning basic computer skills is not as difficult as
it sounds and seniors would greatly benefit from
being able to use a computer.

Keeping in touch with family and friends is made
much easier with a computer. Through the use of e-
mail and chat rooms we can share pictures and
information with people across the world. For
many seniors once they learn how to use email they
can~t believe they never got along without it.
People who they only kept in contact with once or
twice a year, they can now speak with as often as
they please. Everyone loves the convenience of e-
mail since it can be done on your own time.

Learning new things is important no matter what
your age is. Seniors will feel rejuvenated just by
learning a few simple computer skills. Teaching
seniors how to use the Internet is also great because
it opens them to a whole new way to get
information. The Internet is a wealth of new ideas
and information that can benefit a whole range of
people. Seniors will love to surf the Internet for
new recipes and vacation ideas.

Most seniors and most people in fact don~t need the
top of the line computers that have just come out on
the market. Computers that are even two years old
are fast enough to handle most simple computing
requirements such as surfing the Internet and word
processing. A good sized computer screen is
important, as is a color printer. Some other
computer accessories that can be useful are a digital
camera and a scanner.

Many community and retirement centers are now
offering computing classes for seniors. This is a
great way for seniors to learn the basics about
computers in an atmosphere they feel comfortable
in. These classes are typically taught by
professionals who have experience dealing with
people with no previous computer knowledge. You
can find classes for any level of computer
knowledge and even typing classes as well.

Whether they live at home or in a retirement
community learning how to use a computer is a
great way for seniors to feel independent. It allows
them to send emails to family and friends, find old
acquaintances they lost touch with, check what~s
happening in the world, and learn some new
hobbies.
