NASCAR is in league of its own when it comes to automotive
technology. Specialized and leading-edge technology is
needed to maintain these high-performance racecars as they
travel the racing circuit. Only skilled and qualified
techs are allowed to work on these custom racing legends.
Because of the need for highly skilled automotive techs,
the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR)
partnered with a leading automotive technical school
Universal Technical Institute, Inc. (UTI) to create a
training facility dedicated to NASCAR technology known
simply as NASCAR Technical Institute.
In the heart of the nation~s racing enthusiasts,
Mooresville, North Carolina, NASCAR Tech is home to 19 acres
of a 146,000 square feet training center. Yearly, 19,000
students train for the automotive technology career with a
57-week program, supervised by NASCAR Winston Cup Series
Crew Chiefs. These students complete courses and gain hand-
on exciting experience. Over 130 staff members teach
coursework with the emphasis on teamwork, NASCAR history,
and rules. Some courses cover high-performance engines,
body fabrication and transmissions.
Over the first 39 weeks, specific classroom instruction and
first-hand training is conducted in the 49,000 square feet
of 45 classrooms. After this training, students move on to
an internship of 18 weeks with authentic NASCAR teams.
Alternative internships are also available with certain
automotive corporate sponsor like BMW of North America and
Jaguar Cars of North America. The automotive technician
student learns in these custom training classes the
necessary hand-on experience needed inside the operations of
these specific manufacturers.
This high profile automotive technical institute is
addressing not only the need for NASCAR qualified
technicians but also the needs of the marketplace in
general. Estimates are that for every ten existing
automotive technicians working today who will retire soon
or otherwise leave the profession, only two or three new
technicians are trained and ready to enter the workforce.
Automotive companies are keenly aware of the shortage of
qualified automotive technicians.
Diversity is one area that NASCAR Technical Institute is
working to promote more technicians into this field. This
means more diversity programs and scholarships are offered.
For instance, ~Dodge Motorsports Scholarship Program~ offers
full scholarships for 10 new students each year.
Additionally, ~UPS Racing Technical Edge Scholarship~ offers
many qualified minority students funding. NTI is accredited
by Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of
Technology (ACCSCT). Also, the U.S. Department of Education
recognizes NTI for student loans and other types of
financial aid.
